Basketball and Math

Why yes, that is snow on the roof of our garage on APRIL 20!!  Now that we got that out of the way . . . .

We got Samuel a "new" basketball hoop for outside.  One that is actually big enough to challenge him instead of his Little Tikes hoop that he has been using.  He had to try it out right away, even though it was freezing cold outside.

Basketball has taught Samuel a lot of math lessons - addition, subtraction, odd/even numbers, and the newest lesson . . . skip counting!  Tonight, at the dinner table, Samuel counted to 24 by 3s and to 30 by 2s without hardly hesitating.  I'm sure that comes from all of the basketball games we have played!!

Drawing People!

It's these little things that make me so proud of my kids . . . and make me realize (with a little bit of sadness!) how quickly they are growing up.  Today, for the first time, Aliyah started drawing people.  She was coloring with a "white board" and crayons and I look over to see her drawing people - heads, eyes, a mouth, and legs and sometimes hair on their heads.  Samuel has really been into drawing people lately so she must be watching closely!!

A new couch!

Daryl and I went last Friday evening to pick out a new couch for our living room.  Our couch has served us well - it has been very well loved and played on.  It has been one of my kids' favorite toys.  We bought it used so we totally let them do whatever on it - jump, climb, throw the cushions off, make forts, and the list goes on.  They have had so much fun with it that I hesitated getting a new couch because I knew the rules would all have to change.  But the couch was literally falling apart - ripped, torn, horrible springs, and did I mention it was really uncomfortable to sit on?  Whenever we would all sit on the couch and read books, the kids would be falling into each other because everyone always sank towards the middle of the couch.  It was getting a little ridiculous!  So with our tax return money this year, we went couch shopping and ended up at La-Z-Boy and bought this beauty:

It is super comfortable, very tall, and very deep.  Perfect for a family of tall people!! :)  Daryl picked it up today and we are loving it!  The kids weren't so happy when I told them we bought a new couch.  Hope's first question was, "Can we jump on it?"  When I told them no, Samuel said, "You should have bought a couch we could jump on!!!"

The night we bought this couch also started our one week run-in with the stomach flu . . . starting with Samuel followed by Aliyah the next day followed by myself a few days later and Hope a few days after that.  Thankfully Daryl stayed healthy!
