Grundy Lake Provincial Park, although a long drive, was a wonderful experience for our family! The kids had a wonderful time exploring the park and playing with their cousins. We were also able to meet Rachel and Andrew's new daughter, Mya Alyx. She was born on July 21 and they are already camping!! Mya made Karys look so big!
A few things to remember (and some pictures to go with them):
- The kids loved trying to sneak peaks of Zahara's movies while she watched them in the tent (Rodney and Val did this to distract her while she was eating so that she would eat)
- We were able to get a picture of all of the Huininks named after Daryl's Dad, Alex(ander): Alyx Grace, Mya Alyx, Ephraim Alexander, Kevin Alexander, and Karys Alexandra.
- The kids loved slide rock . . . it was a big hit!! I just couldn't think about the water snake that was spotted not far from it. :)
- As always, we had some rain. Not a lot . . . but enough to make some good mud to play in!
- We all went out for ice cream on the last night. Lots and lots of mosquitoes but the ice cream was good.
- On the way home, we decided to go up and over and down through the Upper Peninsula back to Kalamazoo. It was exactly the same distance to go that way than it would have been to go back through Ontario. It was a beautiful drive and the kids did surprisingly well. It was a long wait for the border by the Soo Locks . . . but an entertaining wait nonetheless. Our plan was to stop in Mackinac City for the night (this was a Saturday night). We didn't think through our plan well enough . . . for some reason we just assumed it wouldn't be hard to find an open hotel room on a Saturday night in August in Mackinac City. I lost track of how many hotels we stopped at . . . we could not find anything for less than $500 a night! At this point thought it was already close to 9pm and the kids were DONE being in the car for the day. We finally stumbled upon a run down hotel just outside of Mackinac. It would have to do! We passed on the pool due to the fact that it was green and had hair floating in it. The kids were disappointed but we weren't budging on that! We all had a bed to sleep in and that would have to be good enough! Sunday was an uneventful ride home from Mackinac City to Kalamazoo but we were all thankful to be done in the car and home!!
